Accessory respiratory muscles

The accessory respiratory muscles support lung function when basic breathing alone is not sufficient – for example, during intense physical activity, strain, or shortness of breath. These include muscles such as the pectoral muscle, the intercostal muscles, the rectus abdominis, and the sternocleidomastoid. During exertion, they help increase the volume of air in the lungs by lifting the ribcage or tensing the abdominal area.

In training, the accessory respiratory muscles play an important role, as controlled breathing affects both performance and safety.
