Soleus muscle
Beneath the gastrocnemius lies the soleus muscle, the deeper part of the calf musculature. Unlike its “larger brother,” it does not act on the knee joint but focuses entirely on the movement of the ankle. It allows the foot to be pressed downward (plantarflexion) and is therefore essential for all types of standing stability. Especially during prolonged walking or standing, the soleus carries the main workload. For your training, this means: it is an indispensable muscle for basic leg strength and endurance when performing many repetitions or longer sets.
