Central nervous system

The central nervous system (CNS) includes the brain and spinal cord and serves as the control center for almost all movements, sensory perceptions, and body functions. In strength- and endurance training, it plays a crucial role as it sends signals to activate the muscles, controlling them and enabling the coordination of complex movements. A trained CNS can activate muscle fibers more quickly, accurately, and extensively, directly leading to more strength, explosiveness, and precision.

High training intensities, complex basic exercises or explosive movements like in power training put a significant demand on the CNS. If it becomes overloaded – such as from too frequent or too intense training without sufficient rest – it can lead to central fatigue, resulting in decreased strength, slower reaction times, reduced motivation, and increased susceptibility to injuries.

Recovery for the CNS is not just a matter of muscle rest, but also requires quality sleep, balanced nutrition, and active recovery. Mental stress also affects the CNS and can reduce performance in training. Anyone aiming for long-term progress should consciously manage load and recovery to optimize the interplay between the nervous system and muscles.
